Windows 11 April update breaks third-party backup software

A recent Windows 11 update is creating additional headaches for users, with reports showing that update KB5083769 may interfere with several popular backup applications.

Security update tied to multiple issues

The KB5083769 update was originally released to deliver security improvements for Windows 11.

However, users have since reported several problems, including:

    • Unexpected boot loops
    • BitLocker lockouts
    • Remote Desktop malfunctions
    • Backup software conflicts

The growing list of complaints suggests the update may be affecting system-level services.

    Backup tools reportedly impacted

Several third-party backup solutions appear to be experiencing compatibility issues after the update.

    Affected software reportedly includes:

    • Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud
    • Macrium Reflect
    • NinjaOne Backup
    • UrBackup Server

Users say backup jobs may fail or behave unpredictably after installing the update.

Volume Shadow Copy Service may be responsible

The issue appears linked to the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

VSS is a core Windows component that creates snapshot copies of files so backup software can safely access data while programs remain open.

If VSS becomes unstable, backup systems may struggle to create reliable restore points or snapshots.

    Temporary workaround available

According to reports, affected users may restore backup functionality by uninstalling KB5083769.

However, removing the update could also mean losing associated security fixes.

Users relying heavily on backup software may need to weigh:

    • Stability of backups
    • Security patch requirements
    • Risk of update-related system problems

    Awaiting Microsoft response

Microsoft has not yet announced an official fix or release timeline for a patch.

Until then, affected users may need to monitor support channels and backup software vendors for compatibility updates.
